I suspect it was part of the vector they chose to work with and didn’t bother to remove it.
There is an AmpR promoter in front of Kan as well so there is no need for SV40 unless they wanted to use the same vector for some mammalian cell culture.
Anandamide, question. If the T7 promoter was enough, and all the SV40 inserts are superfluous, why do you think that they used SV40 at all?
